RAW Graduates Feedback
‘There are times in our lives when something happens which dramatically changes the course of our lives. My participation in the Raw Talent program is one of those times. I cannot begin to tell you the incredible journey that I have been on since winning a place at this unique program. The Raw Talent program opened up a whole new world of international possibilities for me in the arts. The mentoring I received lead to focus on my strongest points which led to me participating at the massive ‘Not 30% exhibition’ and ultimately having one of my paintings in the final selection of the global arts awards. It has also enabled me to touch the lives of so many other artists in my town. For an emerging artist, this award represents a great opportunity to develop an art career which will take you beyond your wildest dreams. Sign up!”
“For me, a completely self-taught artist, Raw Talent was perfect. It gave me confidence in my work, it kept me focused, and really helped me to understand what I wanted to achieve with my art and how to make that happen. Having access to the Raw Talent program and the mentoring it provides was invaluable. The level of understanding I gained through the mentoring sessions meant I was fully prepared for the show and understood exactly how I was going to approach it. The weekend of the show was fantastic; I still cant believe how well my work was received. It was so much more than I could ever have hoped for. If you think the Raw Talent program or the Art& show could be for you then I would definitely recommend it.”
“The most valuable part of this experience for me was to talk about my work again to other creative practitioners and to receive critical feedback upon my work, which is greatly missed once you graduate from the studio you have resided in for three years. I have learnt that communication with likeminded people is so important for emerging artists. I feel so grateful to have been given this opportunity to work with a fantastic bunch of artists and to have been involved such a large show. I have learned so much throughout the process and I recommend all emerging artists to apply for this opportunity.”
“Taking part in the RAW scheme has been a brilliant experience for me for so many reasons, meeting new makers, having individually tailored mentoring and getting to speak to experienced artists are just a few. I would encourage anyone who is a new maker or graduate to apply for the scheme it’s a fantastic opportunity!”
“Coming to the end of my degree and thinking about what the next step would be in order to market and sell my work was a daunting prospect. To have been chosen for the RAW scheme was just what I needed as my next step. The support and guidance offered under this scheme was also really great. Having a mentor to discuss concerns with was good, Emily, Victoria and Brendan have done this for many years, and so you know that they know what they are talking about.”
“I have found the process very beneficial and feel more confident now of being able to establish myself as a professional artist in the commercial art world. Advice received plus the experience of the Show at York Racecourse proved invaluable in terms of issues like presentation, pricing, and marketing. The mentoring programme was an integral ingredient in this respect. In addition the experience of interacting with other artists has been both enjoyable and profitable from a developmental stand point. I would thoroughly recommend any newly graduated artist to take advantage of the Project in future years, in my estimation the earlier the better after graduation, in order to build a good foundation for the future and importantly to avoid wasting energy and money on `false trails’.”
“One of the best experiences I could have been awarded! It has allowed me to communicate with other graduates residing in various locations across the country, who normally, I wouldn’t have had the chance to network with. It also provided the opportunity to gain a better understanding concerning how established artists perpetuate professionalism in such an environment, which is important for emerging artists. My initial thoughts were that I was going with the intent to sell, when actually it’s the connections you make, the people you get to experience it with and the mentors who help throughout the whole process, which I found to be the most invaluable part. Being able to say I was part of such a great show and having had this experience has been amazing, I strongly recommend it to graduates as I definitely got a lot out of this opportunity.”
“Being a part of RAW was a wonderful experience. Brendan, Emily and Victoria were the perfect people for the job, bringing with them real experience as makers and business people. As RAW artists we were well supported with the mechanics of preparation and it was a pleasure to pay the 30% commission on sales, knowing this goes back into the pot to continue the outstanding work for next years selected RAW scheme. As a result of having this great opportunity, I have grown personally as a maker but especially on the business side. For me (as I’m sure it is for many) this was the part of being a self-employed maker that I shied away from, but having the preparation day and mentoring sessions really helped. During and following the show I made some fantastic contacts and met some lovely people, got approached by gallery owners asking to stock my work, and also sold some pieces. I’m so happy I got to take part in this award and would encourage new graduates to apply to this fantastic opportunity .”
“The show has been the most excellent stepping stone for myself. The guidance and expertise from the mentors has been extremely motivational, fun and very professional. The weekend of the show was a fantastic opportunity to showcase my work at the most deluxe venue and is a brilliant chance for sutlers to catch eye of my work.”
“The RAW art prize provided excellent support and mentoring. It was one of the best things I have ever done personal, and a great way for emerging artists to understand the art industry and how to set up and develop a strong business model. The help and advice provided was second to none. I would recommend anyone looking to develop their artistic career to enter the raw graduate’s art prize.”
“The RAW Award was a great way to network with people, gain contacts and experience in shows, and to increase my business presence in the local area. This is fantastic for people who are still in the early stage of their career when they are still figuring a lot out about themselves, their market and their work. I was delighted to be part of such a well organised show, created by such a friendly and welcoming team of people. It is also great to be represented by people who believe in promoting the north of England. I would recommend applying to anyone who was in a similar position to me as I really enjoyed the experience. I believe that the show will continue to grow in its success, and the RAW Scheme along with it.”
“Being selected to be part of the RAW scheme was a massive confidence booster. It was a real buzz getting ready for my first big show. I hope it continues to inspire and spur on emerging makers and artists that being a full time and successful creative can be done. It was also wonderful getting to know our mentors who have excellent knowledge and experience in the world of contemporary art and craft and really wanted us to pull together and put on a successful show not only as a group of individuals but as a team, our work was so varied in medium and style yet it all sat together so well and to top it off a really great bunch of characters to get to know and work with over the four days. I wouldn’t even hesitate to say apply for this fantastic scheme it’s such a great opportunity for people to see your work who would have never have found you otherwise, and to be able to show alongside some of the UK’s best craftspeople and artists is definitely another thumbs up from me!”
